The Oatmeal Runs

Ok. 52 books in 52 weeks is hard! So I’m counting a couple shorter books in order to keep me going. That’s where The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run, a short graphic novel by The Oatmeal, comes in. I’m hoping to get into running. I was hoping this book would be a short fun inspirational read that would help get me going again. In short, I think it will be helpful. It was highly entertaining and amusing (not surprising, given the author), and it was wonderful to see that other people have the same insecurities and reasons for running that I have – specifically, I want to run more so that I can eat more :-).
But here’s the big question: would I recommend you buy it? Eh, probably not. I originally bought it because I’d read his online comics about running, which can be found here. The online comic is a supremely funny six-parter about why he runs, and it’ll make you want to go for a jog. I paid $7 or $8 for the rest of the book because I thought this was only a small section of what the rest of the book would be. It turns out, these six parts are about half (or maybe even more), and they’re the better half. That’s not to say the rest of the book isn’t funny and entertaining and motivational, but I don’t think it’s worth the money. If you can find it at a library, check it out and read the whole thing. Otherwise, stick with the online version, and just go for a run!
